Michael, like you I prefer local & rustic kind of places.
Whilst I prefer the traditional look of the hotel you worked in, the design for new Corbyn Head / Phyllis Court looks very much like what they built in place of the old Palm Court Hotel on seafront ….which suspiciously burnt down after being empty for a while and then voila! the new planning application was accepted! (hmmm can we trust Torbay council?)
I can't upload pics here, hope these links work.

Palm Court looked the same as this for many years :

then it burnt down.... https://goo.gl/images/tEHTnc

now it looks like this, https://goo.gl/images/LChuuB

and to be honest those cafes underneath always have people sitting outside even in the winter! it has rejuvenated a prime seafront area.

There's a lot of new development being planned for Torquay, some is ok, some I am not keen on at all!

I liked it the way it was Lynn. Maybe it's just nostalgia working! :-)

People are very divided in Torquay. Some love the new designs, some are campaigning against the new developments. One group is taking Torbay council to court over the proposed hotel on the harbourside which will be 11 storeys tall, incorporate the Pavilion as the reception area, and Cary Green as a car park.

I don't like the Torwood Street plans (by the clocktower), but those lovely shops & buildings have been boarded up for about 10 years, so at least something is happening at last.

Michael you got a mention today on FB group "Torquay in Pictures". Someone posted your photo of Phyllis Court hotel and credited you for the pic. It's re-sparked the debate about development of the site.

Just accidentally watched a bio on Agatha Christie on NPR (good reliable National Public Radio operated by private donation, arts and liberal leaning), and she was from Torquay! It looked idyllic Lynn. Thought of you and just love dear Agatha!!

We've been to her house, Greenway. Beautiful setting overlooking the River Dart. In non-COVID times you can walk round the house, nice to see personal belongings such as her typewriter on the desk in the study. A few times we picked wild garlic in the gardens. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/greenway

Oh thank you for that link Lynn, she was one of Phyllix's favorite authors and therefore, I was exposed. Just love her and we are dreaming about our 50th celebration
that we may do in our 45th year (life is short, celebrate often and early, right?)...there is a Viking cruise that goes all over the British Isles...
Dreaming BIG!!! When this is over or at least manageable.
