You may have heard on the news recently about a new ruling the govt's going to make about paying online (or other) with CCs or debit cards, as companies - specially airlines - are charging far too much (should be 20p, but up to £6 is being charged).

Well.... looking for flights with Easyjet, I found this!

Quote:
Payment fees:

•All bookings will incur a £8.00 booking fee save for bookings made by Visa electron which is free.
•Bookings made by Visa Credit Card, MasterCard, Diners Club, American Express, UATP/Airplus will incur an additional fee of 2.5% of the total transaction value, with a minimum charge of £4.95, whichever is greater
•Note this is a UK retail site. Non UK Cardholders transacting on this site may be subject to a cross border fee applied by their Card Issuer.

That's £13 minimum on the price of the ticket!!
(Underlining mine, as it boggles my mind!)

Here too Torre. Although I did encounter it in England when we bought petrol.

They don't??

Well it must be commonplace in other European countries too, as the EU is about to make changes regarding this as well!

I can understand why they might though. The credit cards are one of the biggest rackets around. They charge you for the card and they also charge the retailer a % all for money that doesn't exist!

There are absolutely no charges for using a credit card in N.A. As Ciderman says, the business is required to pay the cc company a small percentage.
I would go out of my way to not pay a cc surcharge on purchases. Ripoff is right!
You'd think the cc companies would be up in arms because it would discourage use. Do businesses lose money because customers don't have cash, but would use a cc? As I said, it doesn't seem to make good business sense to me--economics 101 says, raise the price, lower demand.

What annoys me is the theatre booking agency which charges a fee on each ticket - not on each transaction - so if you book four tickets you get conned out of four administration charges!

It happens here all the time. The vendors are sick of losing money on their 2-4% transaction fees (like who pays with cash???) to the bank credit cards (American Express is the most expensive)!! Grrrr.
